Evening Prayer will be said every Tuesday in Barford Church at 6.30 p.m. Together with our LPAs, I would very much like to hear of anyone who is ill, unable to come to church or who would simply appreciate a visit. Do let me know so that I can make contact with them. I am happy to take Holy Communion to the house-bound. Rev. Jane.
FOCUS POINT
I wondered about beginning this article by wishing you a happy new year, but then you might think the wrong article had been printed! You may be reading this in December rather than January, but actually we are at the beginning of a new year – the church’s year. The church’s calendar begins with Advent, that season of preparation before the joy of the celebration of the birth of Christ. Of course there are many new years of sorts, scattered through-out the calendar year; there is the beginning of the financial year, for example, and other faiths celebrate their new year at different times.
Coming from the world of education I have a particular fondness for September, the beginning of the academic year. I well remember the sense of anticipation, and slight nervousness as children gathered in their new class, or maybe even a new school, waiting to see what the year would bring. There was a very striking image of starting something new, as the children opened their new exercise books and prepared to write on that first blank page, many of them keen to make this year’s handwriting and presentation better than the last. Some would get most upset if they made a mistake on that first page!
Celebrating a new year, at whatever time, and whatever sort of year it might be, can give us that sense of expectation and enthusiasm that things will be different this year. Some people say they don’t make new year resolutions because they know they will break them after a couple of days, but I’m one of those who thinks “maybe this year....”, even though, more often than not the resolutions do get broken! Whether it’s going for that daily walk, keeping in touch with distant friends, cutting down on the biscuits, or keeping the exercise book tidy – isn’t it worth another go?
The beginning of the church’s year is, perhaps, a good time for resolutions about building our relationship with God. Keeping in touch with God is a bit like keeping in touch with friends; it takes time and commitment, but nourishing that friendship is surely worth the effort! We can meet God and spend time with him as we pray, or as we find a still point in the day, and we meet him in Scripture, in the Bible. At the end of October we celebrated Bible Sunday, which offered the opportunity to reflect upon our use of the Bible and how we can meet God in the words we read.
Perhaps Bible reading could be a resolution for this new church year; giving a little more time for really coming close to God as we read his word, or try a new way of reading that brings the text alive in new ways so that we encounter the living God who loves us and welcomes us into his presence. If you haven’t tried Bible notes, or have left them for a while, these can be a help to finding a pattern and support in Bible reading. The Bible Reading Fellowship and Scripture Union are two of many groups who offer excellent material to get you looking at the Bible in new ways. Look them up on the web, or ask at church about how to find out about them.
However we choose to mark the beginning of the New Year, whenever we celebrate it, we can be encouraged by one thought. Our God is a God of forgiveness, and when we slip up with our resolutions and plans he is always ready to lift us up and give us another chance – with God we can always turn over to a new, clean page and start again!
Bell Ringing. Ringers from Dinton and Barford St Martin are hoping to join forces with ringers from Fovant and Compton Chamberlayne over the next few months with a combined practice, which will probably take place on Wednesdays once in each village in turn during the month. It remains an ambition to get the bells rung in each village once a month for a service though that will obviously depend on the times of services. We shall see how much progress we can make towards that during 2012. Anyone is welcome to come and find out more about the exercise - churchwardens have the contact names and telephone numbers for ringers.
Women who Lunch & Men’s Breakfast. A joint evening buffet with members of Women who Lunch and the Men’s Breakfast, together with their partners, will be held on 7th December, at the Emblems, starting at 7.30 p.m. The speaker will be Mark Coreth, an internationally renowned sculptor of animals. Please contact Sue Evans (smebad@btinternet.com) or Paddy Archer (01722 717990) for further details and to book a place.
Messy Church 3rd December 3-5.15 p.m. Dinton Primary School Hall. Come and join us for an afternoon of games, crafts and something to eat. Contact Rev. Jane.

During that time they raised several thousand pounds, ½ of which returned to Barford church. We are most grateful to them for their dedication and effort. Well done.

St Martin’s Feast on 14th Nov raised £118.50 for church funds. Well done all who organised and attended (and especially well done the Barford Inn staff!).

You will be rewarded for your efforts with some great refreshments - a good start to Christmas festivities. Do come and join us.
