Tisbury Bowling Club

Yes the new season is not too far away now – we are hoping the bad weather won’t delay the start of the season. Jack and his team will make every effort to get it ready for an early start. Our first match takes place on 30 April and unusually this is a Mixed Triples one. Registration Evening is on Tuesday 13 April at 7.00pm so come along with your cheque book, your competition entry form which you will be receiving shortly and also your diary/calendar so you can sign up for the first few matches. Watch out for the date of the Clubhouse spring cleaning – the Committee will be pleased to see you on that day. Don’t forget – many hands make light work.

Potential members are very welcome to come along on that evening to meet the Club Committee and other members and find out what we are all about.

Look on our web site (www.users.greenbee.net/~tisbowls) for a sneak preview of the Fixture List, it is subject to some last minute changes but it will give you an idea what is in store.

Winter Bird News
Crossbills were in small numbers in three of our woods, Great Ridge, Wardour and Grovely, in December and January. They may stay through the spring so it will be worth looking up at the tops of the larches, which seem their favoured tree this winter. Among other finches, Lesser Redpoll appeared in Tuckingmill in February, in the same week as in 2009; two have been regular in a Springfield Park garden. Siskins have been scarcer than usual, while Bramblings began to visit gardens in early February and many Chaffinches were in song on St Valentine’s Day.

A Water Rail adopted a field-ditch by Wardour crossing and once appeared in a garden nearby; these unobtrusive birds may be more numerous in our area than we think, reedbeds being their normal habitat. Little Egrets have been frequent and one appeared on the football pitch, on the halfway line; perhaps it wanted to play on the wing.
