David Gee is conducting family history research and would be interested in finding out more about the quarries of Chilmark.
His grandmother Mabel Jesse of Woodbridge Mill, Fontmell Magna, was a descendent of the Jesses of Chilmark who are commemorated in the church and churchyard. One branch of the family continued to farm at Chilmark into the early part of the 19th century later moving to Blandford Forum, Fontmell Magna and East Knowle. This branch was headed by John Jesse who married a Privett (hence the possible connection to the quarries) John's eldest brother William married a Fitz from Teffont Magna and his descendents include some notable historians, naturalists and novelists including Edward Jesse of Hampton Court, John Heneage Jesse, the historian, Capt Richard Jesse who married Emily, sister of Tennyson and Fryn Tennyson Jesse the novelist and criminologist.

Edward Jesse's daughter Matilda Houstoun wrote an elegiac account of a visit she made to Chilmark after spending the Christmas of 1865 with Lord Pembroke at Wilton. She visits her ancestors' tombs and the manor house which at the time was in a ruinous state. This account can be found in her book "A Woman's Memories of World-Known Men" Chapter VII.

The Jesses were "life holders" of the farms of Chilmark which were partly used to quarry the famous Chilmark stone. David would be most interested if the Jesses had a commercial interest in the quarries.

If you are able to be of assistance, please contact David at david.gee123@ntlworld.com.

Wendy Norman is researching her husband’s family history. One of his relatives, Margaret Lindsay Norman, (known as Lyn) was born in 1915 and came to England from New Zealand.
P1040935
The photo of Lyn, with her niece, Pat, was taken at Tor Cottage, East Hatch (near Tisbury) about 1970. Lyn was Matron at Shaftesbury hospital and married Major General Lee (spelling?) at Red Poulden, West Hatch, after his first wife died. Lyn moved to Tor Cottage after the Major's death, and from there went into a hospice where she is believed to have died in 1979. Wendy would like to trace records of Major General Lee and would be grateful if anyone could let her know any bit of information, however small, and whether his name is spelt that way.
